What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that affords parents the right to have access to their student's educational records, the right to seek to have the records amended, and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records.

Who has the rights to your student's information?

  • FERPA gives both parents, custodial and noncustodial, equal access to student information unless the school has evidence of a court order to state law revoking these rights.  Parents have the right to review the educational records of their children maintained by state education agencies.
  • Schools may release records in compliance with certain law enforcement judicial orders and subpoenas without notifying parents.

How does this affect my student(s)?

  • Either parent/guardian have equal rights to records, attend meetings, and information.  (The person given FERPA rights has to be given specific rights.)
  • The same applies to picking up their student(s), calling them out by phone, or excusing their attendance.
  • When dropping off food or other items in the front office, it will need to be by a guardian or someone with FERPA rights.   If a guardian or FERPA approved person cannot do the drop off, please call the front office to approve the drop off beforehand at 816-359-4130.
  • People listed on the emergency list in Infinite Campus do not have the rights listed above.
  • Parents/guardians are welcome to fill out a FERPA form to make sure that a stepparent has the same rights, or you may call attendance at 816-359-4131 to verify.
  • Someone who has a student(s) who lives with them, does not give them FERPA rights unless they are listed as guardian.  (example; grandparent, sibling, etc.)
  • FERPA forms expire after one year per Park Hill School District Policy, so they must be completed yearly.
  • If a guardian wants to give FERPA rights to an individual(s), the guardian will need to fill out and sign a FERPA form provided by Park Hill School District.
  • You may request a FERPA form from the attendance office or the registrar's office.
  • If you have questions or would like to verify if an individual(s) has an active FERPA form for your student, please call 816-359-4130.
