What is the lead innovation studio?

For some students in the Park Hill School District, high school looks very different.  Students at the LEAD Innovation Studio experience a full-day program where they immerse themselves in a flexible, personalized learning environment, focused on problem-solving skills, project-based learning and professional experiences.  All LEAD students get mentors to help them navigate their education.  This school year, we opened LEAD's new building, which is designed for this unique program.

which students attend the lead innovation studio?

The school's approach appeals to students of all backgrounds and with all kinds of interests and goals.  In the 2021-22 school year, any student will be able to attend LEAD, which mirrors the district's student population as a whole.  The program's personalized nature supports all students.  LEAD provides services for English learners and students with 504s and IEPs, and it offers many advanced courses, including AP and dual credit.

what do classes look like at lead?

LEAD students take the same classes our two high schools offer.  However, our instructional model emphasizes project-based, problem-based and professional-based learning (PBL) experiences, along with personalized learning.  PBL blocks are content specific - Biology,  Algebra, ELA, World History, etc. and last 80 minutes.  Students also meet daily for 80 minutes of Community Time, with a small group of students and their mentor - where we support students through regular individual meets with a mentor who is a teacher and a facilitator, with an emphasis on goal setting and skill development.

how does it work if my student wants to take a music class?

Beginning in the 2021-22 school year, introductory band, choir and orchestra may be taken at LEAD or the home high school.  The placement of these courses is being evaluated and will be based upon enrollment numbers.  All advanced music courses will be offered at the home high school.  Bus transportation will be provided.

What electives will be offered?

We have a list of courses to be offered next year based on student interest.  Many elective options will be offered, including foreign language, art, debate, business classes, core subject electives and more.  We also have numerous AP (Advanced Placement) and dual credit courses.

what is summit?

Summit is an organization we partner with to deliver content and project work through the Summit Learning Platform.

What does student life look like at lead?

While students will take all their classes at the LEAD Innovation Studio, they will still be Park Hill High School Trojans or Park Hill South Panthers, and they will be able to participate in extracurricular activities at their home high schools, such as band, sports and dances.  LEAD also offers a number of student clubs and activities assemblies and opportunities to show school spirit.  

LEAD emphasizes a connection to community - this includes the LEAD community, the Park Hill and Park Hill South high schools' communities, and the local and global communities.  LEAD students work extensively with local non-profits and engage in project work focused on global issues.

how do lead credits translate into a transcript?

LEAD credits are identical to credits from our two high schools.  The mode of instruction is different, but the credit earned and standards covered at the same.

what is a Lead mentor?

We match each student with a mentor (a teacher), who meets with the students one-on-one for approximately 10 minutes each week to discuss progress, goals and habits to support students as they navigate high school.

does lead offer clubs?

Yes, we currently have 10 different clubs based on student interest.  Many of our students participate in at least one club.  Our clubs meet after school with bus transportation provided.

can my student participate in sports and activities?

Yes, absolutely.  Students can participate in extracurricular activities at Park Hill High School or Park Hill South High School.  Many current LEAD students do this now.  There are also select clubs offered at LEAD.

Is transportation provided to and from the home school?

Yes, we provide transportation to and from our two high schools at the beginning and end of each school day.  Students may also drive or be driven directly to and from LEAD.

is there food at lead?

Yes, LEAD has a full-service cafeteria that serves breakfast and lunch.

where is the new lead building?

LEAD's permanent home is located at 7201 N Line Creek Parkway, Kansas City, MO.  However, we're not on google maps yet, so for GPS guidance simply type in "Hopewell Elementary".  Go past the entrance to Hopewell and continue on the paved road to LEAD.
