What is LEAD?

Canvas is LEAD's learning management system, but it is more than just a program for locating and submitting assignments. While Canvas will house the majority of projects and other assignments students will complete at LEAD, it is also an important tool both students and parents can use to monitor progress. 

Most importantly, Canvas focuses on Whole Student Outcomes, which are part of LEAD's philosophy. You can read more about Whole Student Outcomes below. 

Students master through a mastery based learning approach focused on self-direction.  Facilitators help students in developing skills in learning content rather than on delivering content directly to students.  Students learn how to learn and engage with content.

Students develop cognitive skills through engaging, authentic project work.  Students are assessed on transferrable cognitive skills across content areas with an emphasis on growth over time and college and career readiness.

·       Growth Mindset – students are explicitly taught and develop growth mindset through a mastery-based learning approach to content acquisition, project work, and mentoring.

·       Mentoring – students are paired with a teacher mentor who they see daily and meet with 1:1 each week for mentor sessions.

·       Community – significant time is invested into building community with mentor groups, as a school, while also connecting students with local and global communities through authentic project work.

·       Empower - students are giving autonomy and support in taking ownership of their learning and taking on LEADership opportunities in their school and community.

·       Commitment – LEAD staff and students are committed to developing skills to help students to make positive, lasting impact on their community.

·       Innovation – students and staff are encouraged to innovate and improve on how school works and how the world around us can be better.

Students at LEAD are engaged in a comprehensive high school curriculum with the same course offerings available to students at our other district high schools. This includes AP and Dual Credit options.  Our instructional model emphasizes project-based, problem-based and professional-based learning (PBL) experiences along with personalized learning.  PBL blocks are content specific - Biology, Algebra, ELA, World History, etc.  Students also meet daily in Community Time with a small group of students and their mentor where we support students through regular individual meetings with a mentor who is a teacher and a facilitator, with an emphasis on goal setting and skill development.

·       LEAD has a student enrollment of 620 students. Its demographics mirror that of the district.

·       Students commit for 1 full school year

·       20-25% of students are involved in athletic programs at their home high schools.

·       School Teacher-Student Relationships and School Rigorous Expectations scored at the 99^th percentile compared with high schools of similar demographics across the country on the Panorama student survey.

·       Parents of LEAD students consistently rate engagement, climate, and school fit in the 99^th percentile on the Panorama parent survey.

·       Students perform well on local and state assessments.
